Home   2019 Super Kai Weekend Retreat

A weekend of SAORI fun in the mountains of North Carolina. We will weave, and spin, and maybe knit or crochet all while visiting with friends old and new.

Sorry, registration for this event is full

It’s been a while since our last weekend retreat. Our first, in 2015 at Camp Mikell, was a huge success… We had 50 people! The survey responses after that Super Kai told us that people wanted some additional comforts. So we went to a hotel setting…but that came at additional financial cost. The survey responses after those events indicated there were many things that attendees liked. They also noted that the additional costs were not one of those things.

So we’ve been looking for a compromise – a balance. And we hope we have found it: a beautiful setting with good amenities and lower overall cost than the hotel option. Lake Logan is a beautiful property that is spread out over several acres. I am told that while it is walkable you can also drive your car on the property if you need.

The cost of the weekend includes:

  • Your room (there are rates for both double and single occupancy)
  • All meals during the weekend starting with Friday dinner and ending with Sunday lunch
  • The use of a loom if you need it (limited in number, so if you have a loom – preferably SAORI – and can bring it please do so!)
  • Access to the community YARN table
  • A BOAT LOAD of FUN
  • Demos by SAORI Studio Owners and SAORI loom owners

So, what is the cost? Well, in my effort to encourage you to register early, the pricing is based on WHEN you register.

Double Occupancy Rates:

  • Before 5/31/19: $273
  • 6/1/19 – 7/31/19: $283
  • 8/1/19 – 8/10/19: $293

Single Occupancy Rates:

  • Before 5/31/19: $349
  • 6/1/19 – 7/31/19: $359
  • 8/1/19 – 8/10/19: $369

What you need to bring:

  • Finished cloth and/or finished items for show and tell (limit 3 for the Kai)
  • Your loom (preferably SAORI) if you are able (see note below if you are unable to bring your loom). You can also register for the weekend and bring a wheel, or knitting/crochet/etc.
  • A few cones of yarn to share with the group and any treasure basket fiber you might be willing to share
  • And of course any personal health and comfort items you may require

Sponsoring Studios

We have six studios working together to bring you this awesome weekend. Four of these studios are Registered SAORI studios and two are working on becoming studios. What a great gathering of SAORI knowledge.

  • HanDen Studios SAORI Weaving — Denise Prince

Denise began her SAORI journey with Chiaki O’Brien in Chaska, MN in 2009. When she moved to Peachtree City, GA she followed Chiaki’s directions and opened her own SAORI Studio and began building a SAORI community in Georgia. Since then she has attended 2 International Conferences, studied in Japan at SAORInoMori, and has been a guest instructor at other studios.

  • kite tales weaving SAORI arts studio — Tara Kiley-Rothwell

kite tales weaving SAORI arts studio, established in 2016, is located in central Pennsylvania. The sunny storefront location serves a growing local weaving community and visitors from all around the Mid Atlantic states. Welcoming students into the studio, teaching workshops and speaking to guilds keeps owner instructor Tara Kiley-Rothwell busy and happily sharing SAORI philosophy wherever she goes!

  • SAORI Song Weaving Studio — Dawn Hummer

A fiber artist for over 3 decades, Dawn has facilitated artistic creativity across mediums to students, groups and individuals with varying degrees of disability. Dawn balances personal artistic exploration while continuing to carry forward a passion for facilitating creative expression and joy within the larger community through artful and sculptural weaving. Awarded a 2013 Saori Weaving Studio designation and certification from Saorinomori in Osaka, Japan, Dawn Hummer welcomes the public to Saori Song Weaving Studio in Chapel Hill, NC.

  • Woven Heart SAORI Studio — Esther Rodgers

  • Nature Coast Studio — Debrorah Mas

Deborah is an artist and a teacher. She has been painting since the age of 10 and is formally trained as a designer. She began spinning and weaving seven years ago, and five years ago she discovered SAORI. She has trained with Denise at HanDen Studios and in the spring of 2018 (and will again in 2019) trained with Kenzo Jo at SAORI no Mori.

  • The Foldout Cat — Q Wertz.

Liza Q. Wirtz, better known as Q, teaches freestyle weaving at her fiber-arts studio, the Foldout Cat, in Huntsville, Alabama’s well-known arts facility and creative community, Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment. After finding SAORI through Sarah Dauro (Handmade Studios), Q has been actively studying SAORI – weaving, sewing, philosophy, and practice – with Sarah and Denise Prince (HanDen Studios) for approximately three years, working towards realizing her dream of becoming an official SAORI studio. In June 2017, she spent ten days studying with Terri Bibby (SAORI Salt Spring) in Canada; in March 2020, she will head to Japan to study at SAORInoMori. In addition to her ever-broadening range of SAORI-inflected headgear, Q’s creative hats include those of sewist and spinner (both new and engrossing passions), crocheter, baker, and singer, with a side order of estate-planning attorney.
